Laos

Laos sits in the poorest ten countries in the world. Certainly there is little development in vast majority of even tourist affected areas that we visited. None the less we generally didn't see the kind of aching poverty that we saw in India. This is probably because it is still a predominantly rural population and a poor guy sat in a hut in a sunny field just doesn't seem as desperate as a poor guy sat in a gutter supping car smoke. There were fewer beggars and seemingly a larger proportion of relatively happy people.
